Desk Reports:
OC withdrawn over clash in Hathazari
The officer-in-charge (OC) of Hathazari Model Police Station, Abu Kawsar Mahmud, has been withdrawn from duty a day after clashes broke out between Qaumi students and Sunnis in Chittagong over an objectionable post on Facebook. He was removed from duty around 11pm on Sunday, but the matter was made public on Monday.
Chittagong Additional District Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle) Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz confirmed the authenticity of this information.
Earlier, on Saturday evening, a clash broke out between Sunnis and students of Darul Uloom Mainul Islam Hathazari Bora Madrasa. At one stage, the upazila administration imposed Section 144 in the area on Saturday night. This remained in effect until 3 pm the next day.
However, despite the imposition of Section 144, tension and intermittent clashes between the two sides continued until 1:30 am on Saturday. More than a hundred people from both sides were injured in the incident. Later, yesterday, the upazila administration held a meeting with both sides and reached an agreement.
